To help keep communities safe, it may be necessary for Hawaiian Electric to turn off electricity to lessen the risk of wildfires during extreme weather events. This is known as Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS).

 

Wildfire LOOKOUT!

Hawai'i Wildfire Management Organization (HWMO) just launched their Wildfire Lookout campaign on June 30th. The campaign is focused on wildfire prevention, preparedness, and community resilience. To be alert and stay prepared, we can all contribute by following these few steps below:

​

• Lighten Your Landscape: Clear vegetation 10 feet around BBQs and clear brush, leaves, and tree branches around your home.

• Harden Your Home: Clear combustible materials next to and under your home.

• Plan Ahead: Create and plan a family evacuation plan - be prepared and have your go bag ready.

Understanding wildfire warnings, watches and behavior

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS) prioritizes wildfire safety by providing information to help you stay prepared, be aware and act early if a wildfire threat occurs.

​

• Red Flag Warning: NWS issues a Red Flag Warning, in conjunction with land management agencies, to alert land managers to an ongoing or imminent critical fire weather pattern. NWS issues a Red Flag Warning when fire conditions are ongoing or expected to occur shortly.

• Fire Weather Watch: A watch means critical fire weather conditions are possible but not imminent or occurring. A watch alerts land managers and the public that upcoming weather conditions could result in extensive wildland fire occurrence or extreme fire behavior.

• Extreme Fire Behavior: This alert implies a wildfire likely to rage out of control. These fires are often unpredictable due to their erratic and dangerous behavior.
